St. Charles Exchange

Pull up a stool at the vast, gleaming bar lined with bottles of magic waiting to happen and take a minute to soak it in before ordering. The design goal here in this historic building was an early 1900's hotel lobby bar, and indeed, the swank setting (think acres of velvet, plush banquets and the sheen of restored hardwood) harks back to the golden age of service. There was a time when ladies and gentlemen dressed to dine, and it's easy to recall that sophistication with a precisely crafted cocktail here at the bar. In fact, many locals will head straight to the bar for just a drink, though the menu of seasonal takes on turn-of-the-century food classics brings in its own fans. You're there for the libations though, so try one of their punches, or maybe a creation like the Greeting Dawn, made with Bulleit Bourbon, espresso liqueur and vermouth.

The cocktail programs at Proof and St. Charles Exchange are some of the best in the city. They're where I would take a date who likes things fancy.
