Deemed a downtown institution by many, the original Russ & Daughters appetizing shop has been specializing in caviar, smoked fish, herring, and bagels since 1914. For more of a sit down experience, the recently opened Russ & Daughters Cafe offers an expanded menu of brunch-friendly egg dishes and small plates. If you find yourself trapped uptown and craving lox and bialys, fear not—a new location is set to open soon in the Jewish Museum.

Eastern European Jewish comfort food—these are the flavors I'm sort of drawn to at the moment. And the food at Russ & Daughters Cafe is just what I want to eat right now. I love the Heebster, which is a bagel sandwich with whitefish and baked salmon salad.
