The Rhode Island School of Design's Museum of Art sprawls across five interconnected buildings on the East Side of Providence. The museum's permanent collection includes decorative arts, costumes, textiles, as well as more traditional painting, sculpture, and contemporary art galleries. All this is complemented by regular, well-curated temporary exhibitions and student work.

I might be biased, but I think RISD is the best part of Providence. Amazing faculty, teaching passionate students, with awesome facilities. I think you really get the spirit of the school by going to a senior show (my favorites to catch are furniture, textile and jewelry design). Plus there are always free drinks. Some other great things to see at RISD: The Edna Lawrence Nature Lab (a cabinet of curiosities), The RISD Museum, and please please spend some time perusing the Fleet Library (a beautiful restoration of an old bank, with really beautiful and interesting books). Venture upstairs to Special Collections.

A perfectly-sized museum. Two hours should give you a good overview of the collection, although you could always dig deeper. Don't miss the Modern and Contemporary gallery, which has some great design objects.
