The Breakers

44 Ochre Point Ave, Newport, RI, 02840

The mansions of Newport, once summer homes to New York's fabulously wealthy, are testaments to the style, elegance, and sometimes opulence of the gilded age. The Breakers, the summer "cottage" of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, was built in the 1890s, and remains the grandest and most glorious mansion in Newport. Along with the fabulously named Chateau-sur-Mer, Kingscote, Rosecliff, and Marble House, The Breakers is open for visits and tours. Check the website for The Preservation Society of Newport County (link above) for hours and schedule.
