If it’s updated Southern food you want, look no further than Heritage. This Fan District spot is all about taking aspects of Southern cuisine and making something unexpected and new. Bourbon barrel-smoked pork belly goes global with kimchi, bok choy, and ginger, while hangar steak is served with tomato molasses. The bar program stands up to the food thanks to Heritage mixologist Mattias Hägglund, who thoughtfully composes cocktails like the refreshing “Tropical Staycation”—lemongrass-infused vodka with key lime cordial topped with maraschino and lemon. Plenty of local beers on tap are offered as well as a hearty list of wines both red and white.

These days I’m not out a lot for drinks, but I usually end up at a restaurant where I can meet with a friend and have a meal. There is a spot around the corner from me called Heritage, where they take drink making seriously. I’m probably not the most fun for them, because I like wine and beer most often, but a really good meal starts with a great martini.
